Resident Equine Program

In Spring 2006 we changed the name from “Trakehner Mare Program” to “Resident Equine Program” to reflect some major changes in the program that we have been implementing since beginning Fall 2005.

About the Program:
The purpose of this program is two-fold: First, we provide care for some of the University’s resident horses, and second, we provide an opportunity for mostly first to third year veterinary students to gain very valuable practical and hands-on experience in equine handling and care. We are divided into 5 teams, each of which cares for one of our five equine residents. Each team is further subdivided into groups of two or three students with one experienced and one less experienced student. Students in these groups commit to caring for their horse once or twice a week for about 15 minutes (or more if they want to) for one year. We’ll work out a weekly schedule together that leaves you with enough flexibility (we know how demanding classes are…), but also ensures consistent care for the horses. You’ll keep your weekends, final weeks and long breaks free.

About Us:
We are some 40 to 50 vet students with various levels of equine experience. What we all have in common is simply an interest in horses. Many of us have had no prior experience with horses whatsoever and just want to find out, some of us have been with and around horses for many years, some of us may wonder if equine medicine could be a career choice and want to get more exposure, some of us just want to complement the theoretical class room education, and some of us just consider spending time around horses a welcome and relaxing break from the class room stress… Anything goes, really!

What’s in it for me?
• Complement your education! You’ll add quite some practical experience that the VetMed program can otherwise offer to a limited degree only
• Learn the basics of daily care, such as safe handling, grooming, hoof care, turn out, socializing etc.
• As experience and commitment allows, learn to handle stallions, to free longe your horse, perform dentistry and hoof trimming.
• Pass on your knowledge to fellow students. Teaching is a wonderful experience!
• Maybe become a team leader the next year?
• Check out what you just learned in the class room on a real horse or try your first physical examination!
• Find out what else is going on in Equine Ward 4. Get to know people, do some networking, see some reproduction work or other exiting equine veterinary medicine first hand. Or maybe you run into our farrier and can see what he is up to…

What do I need to bring?
• Interest in horses.
• Any level of experience with horses
• A happy attitude ?
• A little bit of commitment
• Willingness to work with other students in teams.

OK, you’ve got me interested… What should I do?
• Contact the program managers Jennifer Lietzau (VM-11)
or Ashleigh Brauer (VM-10)
