EMERGING INFECTIOUS DISEASE
Genetic Engineering News (New Rochelle, N.Y., April 22) -- Little is known about the global distribution of orthopoxviruses, but their potential to cross from other animals into humans warrants more attention, says Tony Goldberg, a professor of veterinary pathobiology and of anthropology at Illinois and lead author on a study that found red colobus monkeys in a park in Western Urganda had been exposed to and developed antibodies to a virus similar but not identical to known orthopoxviruses.

VETERINARY TECHNICIAN CONFERENCE
Channel 3 (WCIA) News (March 29) -- More than 100 veterinary technicians attended a two-day continuing education conference at the College of Veterinary Medicine on March 28 and 29. Jenny Rose, an oncology technician in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and one of the speakers at the conference, explained that the conference covered issues in ICU/emergency medicine, pain management, anesthesia, cancer care, dentistry, imaging, and rehabilitation. Footage of a radiology wet lab was aired.

EXOTIC PET MANUAL
Medical News Today (Bexhill-on-Sea, England, March 23) -- The new "Manual of Exotic Pet Practice," published by Elsevier, provides detailed information on all of the major exotic animal groups. University of Illinois wildlife veterinarian Mark A. Mitchell co-edited the book with LSU professor of zoological medicine Thomas N. Tully Jr.
