Additional Courses You Might Find Helpful
There are many courses that prepare you for the study of veterinary medicine
beyond the basic mandatory prerequisites. It is obviously not feasible
to take all or even a great many from the list below and we do not require
any of them. However, we STRONGLY encourage you to fit a few of these
into your preparation if at all possible. Remember veterinary medicine
is a “post graduate” science study and will be more do-able
if you have depth in your preparation. Which courses should you take?
That depends on your interests, academic strengths or weaknesses and what
your college of choice has to offer.
Anatomy or Comparative Anatomy
Animal Science courses in the areas of reproduction,
genetics, nutrition or behavior
Bacteriology Immunology
Invertebrate Zoology Cell Biology
Medical Microbiology Ecology/Population Biology
Molecular Biology Embryology
Mycology Endocrinology
Nutrition Entomology
Parasitology Epidemiology
Physiology Genetics
Statistics Histology
Toxicology
Virology
…and if you have even more time for course completion a survey
of business course or any kind of finance, management, or human resources
course is always useful. In one way or another, those engaged in veterinary
medicine find themselves also responsible for business functions of various
kinds.
