Admission Procedures
This publication is intended as a resource for students applying in the fall of 2007 for admission in the fall of 2008 to the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine.

Application through VMCAS
New students enter the College of Veterinary Medicine in the fall only. The application deadline is October 2, 2008, for entry the fall of 2009. All applicants must apply through the Veterinary Medical College Application Service (VMCAS). Transcripts must be sent directly to:

Transcripts must be postmarked no earlier than June 1, 2008 and no later than October 2, 2008. Final official fall transcripts are due February 1, 2009, for applicants invited to interview.
Letters of evaluation must be sent directly to VMCAS by October 2. We will only accept three letters from the evaluators listed on your VMCAS application.
Potential applicants are encouraged to read all of the information contained in this catalog and speak with an admissions advisor (admissions@cvm.uiuc.edu) or 217.333.1192 if you have further questions.
All applicants will complete and submit the application online. The application is available at http://www.aavmc.org. By obtaining a user name and password, it is possible to do a portion of the application at one time, save it, and complete additional sections at later dates. Take as much time as you need to do a thorough job of completing the application. Try to submit well before October 1 to avoid any possible last minute problems at the site.
Supplemental Application and Review of Applications
A supplemental application is required. The applicant will complete and submit the application online. The supplemental application is available at https://admit-s.cvm.uiuc.edu. By obtaining a user name and password, it is possible to do a portion of the application at one time, save it, and complete additional sections at later dates. The supplemental application and processing fee must be submitted no later than October 1. Applicants are encouraged to submit the supplemental application as early as possible, though it is not possible to submit it before the applicant obtains a VMCAS ID.
A non-refundable processing fee of $60 ($75 for international applicants) is required with submission of the supplemental application. The fees will be submitted on-line using a credit card. We accept MasterCard and Visa.
An application will be considered complete when the University of Illinois has received the complete VMCAS application, all transcripts, letters of evaluation, GRE scores, the College of Veterinary Medicine’s completed supplemental application, and the processing fee. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that their application is complete. After an initial evaluation, only qualified competitive applicants will be considered for the mandatory personal interview.
To track the status of your application, print your supplemental application and refer to the instructions to access your personal status page. Your status page should be available mid October and can be viewed at https://admit-s.cvm.uiuc.edu. Please check this page for accuracy. It will contain your transcript information, designation of science courses, cumulative and science grade-point averages, Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score(s), and other information about your application. If you believe there are errors in the information, please contact the Office of Academic and Student Affairs immediately at 217.333.1192. All questions regarding GPA calculations need to be submitted by November 1, 2008.
Students who are currently enrolled in graduate school must submit a letter from their advisor requesting delineation of their current status in graduate school and the likely completion date of their graduate program.
Invitations to Interview
You will not hear from the College until all applications have been evaluated by the Admissions Advisory Committee. This process usually is complete by the middle of January, at which time invitations to interview will be mailed to the highest ranking applicants. Because final fall transcripts are not due until February 1, 2008, invitations to interview will not include fall grades in the initial calculation of the grade-point averages.
Interviews will be conducted February 18, 2008. Individuals who are interviewed but not offered admission will be placed on an alternate list. Alternate status does not guarantee admission, nor does it convey any preferential standing in subsequent application cycles.
Residency Considerations in Admission
Preference is given to applicants who are residents of Illinois and who do not claim residency in another state. A portion of each class (approximately 25 seats of the entering class of 120) is offered to highly qualified nonresidents.
Deferral of Admission
The Admissions Advisory Committee assumes the applicant, if offered admission, is fully prepared to enter the veterinary program starting in the next fall semester. Deferral of admission is considered on a case-by-case basis and granted only under extreme circumstances.
Petition for Deletion of Undergraduate Grades (Optional)
The Admissions Advisory Committee recognizes that extraordinary circumstances may negatively affect the academic performance, and subsequently the grade point average, of a student. Applicants who have or will complete a BS/BA degree prior to the Fall 2009 semester class have the option of petitioning to delete grades earned during their first year of undergraduate work from the grade point average calculations. If mandated pre-requisite courses are included in your first year of study your petition will not be considered. You must provide an explanation of the circumstances that led to the poor academic performance.
If you wish to petition the Admissions Advisory Committee to delete your first year of undergraduate grades from the calculations of your grade point average, you will have to fill out a form attesting such on the Supplemental Application that is required by the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine.

Petition to Ignore Academic Record Completed over six years ago (Optional)
The Admissions Advisory Committee recognizes that an academic record completed over six years ago may not appropriately reflect the current academic abilities of the applicant. Applicants who completed a BS/BA degree (or higher) prior to the Fall 2001 Semester may petition to have all course work completed prior to that time ignored in the admission decision process. To be eligible for consideration for admission, the applicant must meet or exceed the requirements of Plan B. You must provide an explanation for why the course work completed prior to Fall 2001 Semester should be ignored.
If you wish to petition the Admission Advisory Committee to ignore all course work completed prior to six years ago, you will have to complete a form in the Supplemental Application that the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine requires for the admission application process.

Graduate Course Work Summary (Optional)
If you are completing or have completed an MS or PhD degree, the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Illinois recognizes the use of graduate course work in the calculation of your science GPA. Note that no more than eight (8) semester hours of graduate level independent study credit will be applied to the calculation of your science GPA. Please review the following rules:
Use of Graduate Course Work in the Grade Point Average Calculations
The rules governing the use of graduate work in the grade point average calculations will be the same as those for undergraduate course work with the exception of Thesis Credit and Special Courses (or Independent Study Courses).
Thesis Research Credit
There are numerous ways Thesis Research is assigned a transcript grade. Some institutions assign a letter grade each semester, or quarter. Some assign a Pass/Fail (P/F) or Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U) or Credit/No Credit (CR/NC) each semester. And still other institutions defer (DF) the grade each semester until the thesis is completed, at which time a grade change is filed and the appropriate transcript grade entered.
For the purpose of grade point average calculations, letter graded Thesis Research will be treated as a regular course. P/F, S/U, CR/NC, and DF graded Thesis Research will be assigned an equivalent letter grade (typically A) by endorsement by the thesis advisor. You can download endorsement forms in Microsoft 2000 or Acrobat PDF formats. No more that eight (8) semester hours of Thesis Research Credit will be applied to the calculation of the cumulative grade point averages.
Independent Study Courses
If you have completed graduate level independent study courses which you wish to be included in the calculation of the science grade point average, you must submit forms with your supplemental application. No more than eight (8) semester hours of graduate level independent study will be applied to the calculation of the science grade point average.
All the forms that you will need can be found in the Supplemental Application that the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine requires for the application process.

Transcript Information
Applicants must send ALL transcripts from ALL colleges and universities attended post high school directly to the College of Veterinary Medicine. Transcripts must be postmarked by October 2. Fall transcripts are due by February 1, 2009.
