Grading System

The grading system for all veterinary students is mandated by the Student Code Article 3 of the University and applies to all academic schools including the professional degree programs on campus.  Grades may be assigned in the evaluation of veterinary medical student performance are as follows:

  A+, A, A-  Excellent
  B+, B, B-  Good
  C+, C, C-  Fair
  D+, D, D-  Poor  (lowest passing grade)
  Failure
  ABS Absent from final examination without an acceptable excuse
  I   Incomplete. Approved extension of time to complete the final examination or other requirements of the course.
  S Satisfactory
  U Unsatisfactory

*  The use of the +/- is optional and used at the discretion of the instructor. 

All course coordinators are responsible for informing students on the first day of class the course grading scale.  All students must achieve and maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.25/4.0 in core courses at the end of each academic year they are enrolled in the professional curriculum. If the cumulative GPA for any academic year falls below 2.25, the student will be dropped from the college.  Any student receiving a grade of “F” or “U” in any one or more core courses will be dropped from the college.

Awards and Scholarships

Each year more than 100 awards and scholarships totaling more than $200,000 are given exclusively to students in veterinary medicine by the College’s Awards and Scholarships Committee. Many of these are reserved for students in their third or fourth years who are making exemplary academic progress in the veterinary curriculum and contributing substantially to student life and the profession.

In addition, students seeking employment may be hired by departments of the College on an hourly wage basis. Employment opportunities are also available at the University.
