VSOP Talks About Veterinary Science!
Program Name |
Description |
Age Range |
The Biology of Wound Healing |
This program consists of a discussion of normal skin growth and healing, plus a hands-on suturing lab. Students can practice suturing on cloth suture boards or on banana-skins. If time permits, this will be followed up by a discussion of the possible effects of improper suturing and/or Halsted's Principles of Surgery. The College of Veterinary Medicine has been using this program since 1999. |
High School thru College |
The Biology of Bone Fracture Healing |
This program begins with a discussion of the biology of adult bone growth and fracture repair. This is followed by an introduction to fracture stabilization and fixation, with a focus on the medical and physical issues involved (i.e. blood supply, load transfer, etc.). Depending on the students' backgrounds we may also do a hands-on workshop on the placement of external fixater frames. |
High School thru College |
The Biology of Synovial Joints |
This program starts off with a discussion of the biology of a normal synovial joint, including the mechanical load-bearing functions associated with its surfaces. Students can then examine dissected specimens to observe the general structure of the joint, synovial fluid, associated ligaments, etc. Next comes a discussion of some of the potential problems associated with a synovial joint, such as arthritis and other forms of lameness. And finally, if time permits, we will introduce the "stay-up-rest" in the hindlimb of horses, which allows the hindlimb to support weight with only minimal muscular exertion. |
High School thru College |
The Terror of Hoof-and-Mouth Disease |
A presentation on the history of Hoof & Mouth disease and its potential effects on the American food animal industry / economy. This includes a discussion of the "food chain" of food animal production (i.e. how meat reaches the supermarket), the history of Hoof & Mouth disease in Europe, and the sorts of regulation that will hopefully prevent it from reaching American markets. |
High School thru College |
Dentistry |
A workshop on the biology of teeth, including the structure of the tooth and of the alveolus (socket) in which the tooth sits. This program is based on a lecture used in the "Introduction to Gross Anatomy" course for first year veterinary students. Students will be able to see the relevant structures by dissection, radiographs, and pictures. |
