Iowa State University - Center for Food Security and Public
Health (CFSPH)
- Master of Public Health Program at the University of Iowa for Veterinary Students
A variety of forces, such as the new focus on public health preparedness including areas of zoonotic diseases, food security and food borne/vector borne diseases; environmental health; and outbreaks of rabies and West Nile virus call for preparing professionals who possess knowledge and skills in both veterinary medicine and public health. The purpose of the dual DVM/MPH is to provide formal training in public health in addition to formal training in veterinary medicine. This dual degree is a natural combination of preparation in two related and complimentary health care disciplines.
To be a candidate for this combined degree the applicant must be accepted into the DVM program as a condition of acceptance into the combined degree. This may occur concurrently but the condition of acceptance into the DVM must be made before final acceptance into the combined program. The admission committees of the two colleges will independently review the candidate for acceptance into the combined degree.
Visit: http://www.public-health.uiowa.edu/mph/about/combined_degrees/dvm_mph.html for information about the combined degree program.
- Master of
Public Health Distance Learning Program for Practicing Veterinarians
The University of Iowa, College of Public Health, in collaboration with the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine, is offering a distance-learning Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) program for practicing veterinarians. Applications for the second cohort of students are due March 15, 2008 and courses will begin with an in-person 2-week summer session in Iowa City from June 2-13, 2008. The second summer session will be in Ames in June 2009. The rest of the time, courses will be taken via the Internet. The program is designed to take two full years to complete. "Course availability at-a-distance is critical for many veterinarians who are unable to leave their practice location for extended time periods," said Mary L. Aquilino, Ph.D., assistant dean and director of the UI Master of Public Health program.
"The combination of summer on-campus institutes and Web-based instruction offers a practical blend of on-campus and distance-learning opportunities." The program was developed in response to recent national and world events calling for public health preparedness in areas where public health and veterinary medicine overlap. An Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) task force has identified an urgent need for veterinarians trained in public health. The distance-learning MPH will play a crucial role in meeting this need.
"This distance-learning MPH program provides practicing veterinarians with an excellent opportunity to contribute to the national need for more public practice veterinarians," said James A. Roth, DVM., PhD, director of the Center for Food Security and Public Health and at the ISU College of Veterinary Medicine. Veterinarians with an MPH degree can look forward to employment opportunities in local, state and federal health, agricultural and environmental agencies, colleges and universities, the private sector food industry, the military, and international public health organizations. A degree in veterinary medicine from a U.S. accredited college of veterinary medicine is a prerequisite for the program. Students will be enrolled in the UI College of Public Health. Selected faculty from the ISU College of Veterinary Medicine will provide instruction as adjunct faculty of the UI.
For more information about the distance-learning MPH program, contact Lily French at 319-384-5991 in Iowa City (lily-french@uiowa.edu), or Danelle Bickett-Weddle, DVM, MPH at 515-294-1492 in Ames (dbweddle@iastate.edu).

University of Sydney
- New Training Program in Veterinary Public Health Management
The Faculty of Veterinary Science at the University of Sydney
has recently launched a new postgraduate program in Veterinary
Public Health Management. The program has two major objectives.
The first is to develop veterinarians with technical expertise
in veterinary epidemiology, food safety, zoonotic diseases, animal
health economics, disease control, and animal health policy development.
The second aim - providing skills focused on team leadership
and project management - recognises the need for veterinarians
in the animal health industries to work in multidisciplinary
teams, and manage research and policy processes.
The VPHMgt program has three articulated award courses at
the Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Masters levels,
and is offered by a combination of distance education units of
study and short, intensive residential units at the University
of Sydney. Distance education units will provide an appropriate
learning environment for busy professionals, with small group
interaction via a web-based classroom.
Further information about the program can be found on our
Veterinary Public Health Management website - http://www.vetsci.usyd.edu.au/publichealth_management/index.php
University of Tennessee - Knoxville
Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine
- Program in Epidemiology and Public Health
The Veterinary Epidemiology and Public Health program is administered through the Department of Veterinary Integrative BioSciences within the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. The graduate program in Veterinary Epidemiology and Public Health offers a M.S. in Epidemiology (thesis option) and a departmental Ph.D. (with emphasis in Veterinary Epidemiology) which prepares students for leadership roles in epidemiological study design, evaluation, and professional research, in both animal and human populations. Completion of a dissertation is required for the Ph.D. degree through this program. In addition, a thesis or non-thesis M.S. degree in Veterinary Public Health is offered with approval of a program faculty advisor. At present (Spring 2005), a grant funded program for DVMs interested in biodefense for obtaining a non-thesis MS degree in Veterinary Public Health is under development and will start in the Fall 2005 semester.
Wageningen Agricultural University, the Netherlands
- MSc Animal Health Economics - The MSc Animal Health
Economics is a specialization in the Wageningen Agricultural
University MSc programme Agricultural Economics and Management.
Animal Health Economics is a relatively new discipline that supports
the decision-making process in optimizing animal health management.
The field deals primarily with four interrelated aspects: (1)
risk analysis of introduction and spread of diseases, (2) the
economic effects of animal disease, (3) developing methods for
optimizing decisions when individual animals, herds or populations
are affected, and (4) determining the profitability of specific
disease control and health management programs and procedures.
