The mission of Veterinary Epidemiology at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University is education of graduate and professional students, research regarding animal health and production, and consultation for study design and analysis.

Georgetown University

Georgetown University is initiating a Master of Science program in
Biohazardous Threat Agents and Emerging Infectious Diseases. The program is
sponsored by the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the School of
Medicine and is being coordinated by Dr. Leonard Rosenthal. The one-year
course of study is intended to provide a thorough introduction to
biodefense and emerging infections for persons planning careers in
medicine, scientific research, or public policy, including various branches
of government and private industry.

The program, which begins 1 Sep 2004, includes the following courses:

It also includes several seminars that will provide in-depth discussions of
biological and chemical threats and biosurveillance. Electives are also
available in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and in the
Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
The deadline to register for fall term is 16 Aug 2004. A brochure for the

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

The Division of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine at the University of Illinois seeks applicants for several Graduate Research Associate positions leading to the MS/PhD degree in veterinary epidemiology. Successful applicants can participate in one of several research areas related to epidemiology including infectious diseases, food safety, antimicrobial resistance, animal health economics, host-parasite ecology, medical informatics, biostatistics, epidemiologic methods, and modeling.
Well-funded research programs are active within the Division. Our division is one of the largest such programs in the United States with 6 full time faculty and several faculty with partial or adjunct appointments. These research programs are often multidisciplinary investigations using the expertise of many faculty, and some involve collaboration with state and federal agencies.
Direct inquiries are encouraged by e-mail or phone to any of the Division faculty, listed in the Department website: http://www.cvm.uiuc.edu/vp/, where further information is also available. Applicants should send a curriculum vitae, a statement of goals and interests, transcripts, GRE scores (if available), and three letters of reference to Carla Manuel, 2001 S. Lincoln Ave, Urbana, IL 61802. Phone 217-333-2449; fax 217-244-7421.

Iowa State University - Center for Food Security and Public Health (CFSPH)

A variety of forces, such as the new focus on public health preparedness including areas of zoonotic diseases, food security and food borne/vector borne diseases; environmental health; and outbreaks of rabies and West Nile virus call for preparing professionals who possess knowledge and skills in both veterinary medicine and public health. The purpose of the dual DVM/MPH is to provide formal training in public health in addition to formal training in veterinary medicine. This dual degree is a natural combination of preparation in two related and complimentary health care disciplines.

To be a candidate for this combined degree the applicant must be accepted into the DVM program as a condition of acceptance into the combined degree. This may occur concurrently but the condition of acceptance into the DVM must be made before final acceptance into the combined program. The admission committees of the two colleges will independently review the candidate for acceptance into the combined degree.

Visit: http://www.public-health.uiowa.edu/mph/about/combined_degrees/dvm_mph.html for information about the combined degree program.

The University of Iowa, College of Public Health, in collaboration with the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine, is offering a distance-learning Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) program for practicing veterinarians. Applications for the second cohort of students are due March 15, 2008 and courses will begin with an in-person 2-week summer session in Iowa City from June 2-13, 2008. The second summer session will be in Ames in June 2009. The rest of the time, courses will be taken via the Internet. The program is designed to take two full years to complete. "Course availability at-a-distance is critical for many veterinarians who are unable to leave their practice location for extended time periods," said Mary L. Aquilino, Ph.D., assistant dean and director of the UI Master of Public Health program.

"The combination of summer on-campus institutes and Web-based instruction offers a practical blend of on-campus and distance-learning opportunities." The program was developed in response to recent national and world events calling for public health preparedness in areas where public health and veterinary medicine overlap. An Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) task force has identified an urgent need for veterinarians trained in public health. The distance-learning MPH will play a crucial role in meeting this need.

"This distance-learning MPH program provides practicing veterinarians with an excellent opportunity to contribute to the national need for more public practice veterinarians," said James A. Roth, DVM., PhD, director of the Center for Food Security and Public Health and at the ISU College of Veterinary Medicine. Veterinarians with an MPH degree can look forward to employment opportunities in local, state and federal health, agricultural and environmental agencies, colleges and universities, the private sector food industry, the military, and international public health organizations. A degree in veterinary medicine from a U.S. accredited college of veterinary medicine is a prerequisite for the program. Students will be enrolled in the UI College of Public Health. Selected faculty from the ISU College of Veterinary Medicine will provide instruction as adjunct faculty of the UI.

For more information about the distance-learning MPH program, contact Lily French at 319-384-5991 in Iowa City (lily-french@uiowa.edu), or Danelle Bickett-Weddle, DVM, MPH at 515-294-1492 in Ames (dbweddle@iastate.edu).

University of Sydney

The Faculty of Veterinary Science at the University of Sydney has recently launched a new postgraduate program in Veterinary Public Health Management. The program has two major objectives. The first is to develop veterinarians with technical expertise in veterinary epidemiology, food safety, zoonotic diseases, animal health economics, disease control, and animal health policy development. The second aim - providing skills focused on team leadership and project management - recognises the need for veterinarians in the animal health industries to work in multidisciplinary teams, and manage research and policy processes.

The VPHMgt program has three articulated award courses at the Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Masters levels, and is offered by a combination of distance education units of study and short, intensive residential units at the University of Sydney. Distance education units will provide an appropriate learning environment for busy professionals, with small group interaction via a web-based classroom.

Further information about the program can be found on our Veterinary Public Health Management website - http://www.vetsci.usyd.edu.au/publichealth_management/index.php
