Applications are invited for a PhD scholarship to work on a project entitled Assessment of the vulnerability of groundwater to pesticide inputs from Irish Agriculture. The successful applicant will be required to develop a risk ranking procedure to quantify the relative risk of pesticides used in Irish Agriculture on human and ecosystem health. Following an initial ranking of pesticides the successful applicant will use other modelling tools to create a physically- based numerical model of water flow and reactive solute transport in different field soils in Ireland.

Biomathematics & Statistics Scotland (BioSS) seeks to appoint a research fellow or senior research fellow with a strong quantitative background to develop stochastic modelling and advanced methods of statistical inference within a new collaborative Centre of Excellence in veterinary epidemiology. This exciting initiative links six university and research institute partners and aims to consolidate Scotland’s leading position in animal epidemiology.
Potential applications include: developing and fitting dynamic network models for the spread of disease through unobserved contact structures between animals or between farms; making inference for infection models with observation processes consistent with field surveillance practice and modelling local spatio-temporal spread of infection between neighbouring farms. However, depending on skills and experience the post-holder will have the opportunity to develop other relevant research interests in collaboration with staff from the six partner organisations. More details of the proposed research plans are available at http://www.bioss.ac.uk/appointments/epic_scientific_programme.html.
Our ideal candidate will have either a PhD or an MSc/MRes in a highly quantitative field such as statistics, physics or mathematical biology. The candidate should meet at least some of the following requirements: knowledge of computationally intensive methods of statistical inference such as Markov chain Monte Carlo; broad statistical understanding; application of stochastic methods in modelling biological systems. Evidence of a personal contribution to published research will be required for appointment to the higher grade. Experience in statistical epidemiology would be an advantage. Excellent verbal, inter-personal and written communication skills, the ability to work independently, and enthusiasm for collaborative inter-disciplinary research are all essential.
The post will be based at the science campus of Edinburgh University, offering a rich and multidisciplinary research environment. BioSS has over 30 staff based at four different sites in Scotland. BioSS is one of the largest European research groups in the application of mathematics and statistics in the biological sciences, and provides a stimulating and supportive environment for applied statistical and mathematical research. For more information on BioSS in general please visit our web site at http://www.bioss.ac.uk/
Two starting grades are available, depending on experience, with salaries on incremental scales in the ranges £25.5 - £28.4K or £31.9 - £36.0K (further progression subject to performance), plus contributory pension scheme.
To apply, please send a CV and covering letter to applications@bioss.ac.uk, quoting the relevant reference number. The application should include your education and employment history, a full publication record, names and addresses of three referees and a short description of why you consider yourself suitable for this post.

Position type: Ingenieur de recherche en biologie (IR2 – type A1A23)
Location: INRA- Unité d'Épidémiologie animale – Centre de Clermont-Ferrand-Theix - FRANCE
Position # for application: IR08-SA-2
Research area
Molecular epidemiology applied to animal infectious diseases and zoonosesThe scientific objective is to take into account the molecular variability of pathogens and vectors in epidemiological studies, as well as pathogen selection and evolution processes. This approach will be involved in the analysis and modelling of the temporal and spatial spread of pathogens, the balance between host and pathogen, the interactions between pathogens and vectors, and the epidemiological cycles of diseases.
The work will focus first on topics studied in the animal epidemiology unit. One is to study tick-borne pathogens: how pathogen evolution and diversity are influenced by host diversity, genetic variability of Ixodes ricinus ticks, and the other pathogens or symbionts that co-infect ticks. Another model is the molecular epidemiology of influenza virus.

We are looking for candidates with good knowledge in evolutionary biology (population genetics, molecular phylogeny) as well as skills in modelling. The position requires a strong interest in multidisciplinary research with applied objective, and the ability to work in teams made of researchers from different fields in various environments.
The application must be sent to INRA before March 25th at 17h00 (5:00pm). It encompasses a scientific report on previous work (2 pages) and motivation for the position (3 pages). The application will first be reviewed (without the presence of the applicants); then, the short listed candidates will take a written exam and have an interview with the jury.
