- The purpose of this site is to educate any person interested
in epidemics. Epidemics are diseases that affect many people
at once. On this site are details about some of the worst epidemics
throughout history as well as general information on diseases.
-
-
Click on the camera to see all the images for that disease. Also, you can click on the disease name ---- this will bring up the fact sheet text, with the photo numbers inserted in the text. Clicking on the number will bring up the associated photo.
- The Animals in Disasters Independent Study Course is now
available through the Independent
Study Program of the Emergency Management Institute (EMI),
the educational wing of the Federal Emergency Management Agency
(FEMA). These are the only official training materials specifically
on the care of animals and their owners in disasters. The course
can be used to obtain continuing educational credits.
-
- The course is in two modules:
-
- This handbook provides basic facts regarding foodborne pathogenic
microorganisms and natural toxins.
- A collection of teaching materials which can be used in a
wide variety of classroom situations to impart to students an
understanding of the principles of the science of epidemiology.
-
- Epidemiology is an interdisciplinary science that facilitates
the discovery of scientific inquiry as related to real world
problems of disease and health. The seven sections of this web
site are built around a case study format based on an actual
outbreak; this case study method facilitates discovery of the
principles of the scientific method as used by public health
professionals of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC).
-
- These materials contain definitions of epidemiology, suggestions
for interdisciplinary approach to teaching, and profiles of Disease
Detectives suitable for motivating students toward careers in
public health. The materials can be used for didactic presentations
only or in conjunctionwith interactive case-study activities.
The material is appropriate for use in curricula in science,
math, social studies, and other fields.

HealthMAP <http://www.healthmap.org/>
Global Disease Alert Map. HealthMAP brings together disparate data sources to achieve a unified and comprehensive view of the current global state of infectious diseases and their effect on human and animal health. This freely available Web site integrates outbreak data of varying reliability, ranging from news sources (such as Google News) to curated personal accounts (such as ProMED) to validated official alerts (such as World Health Organization). Through an automated text processing system, the data is aggregated by disease and displayed by location for user-friendly access to the original alert. HealthMAP provides a jumping-off point for real-time information on emerging infectious diseases and has particular interest for public health officials and international travelers.
The International Portal on Food Safety, Animal & Plant Health facilitates trade in food and agriculture products and supports the implementation of the Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Agreement by providing a single access point for authorized official international and national information across the sectors of food safety, animal and plant health.
NetEpi , which is short for " Net work-enabled Epi demiology", is a collaborative project to create a suite of free, open source software tools for epidemiology and public health practice. Anyone with an interest in population health epidemiology or public health informatics is encouraged to examine the prototype tools and to consider contributing to their further development. Contributions which involve formal and/or informal testing of the tools in a wide range of circumstances and environments are particularly welcome, as is assistance with design, programming and documentation tasks.
ProMED Mail HealthMap <http://healthmap.org/promed>
Interactive Map of ProMED Reports. A mapping system for visualizing ProMED-mail reports is available at <http://healthmap.org/promed>. It can also be accessed via the "Maps of Outbreaks" link on the left hand side of the ProMED-mail website.
This system, developed by HealthMap in collaboration with ProMED-mail, automatically places links to ProMED-mail reports on a world map. Clicking on a map marker will access a list of reports corresponding to the selected location. These in turn can be clicked to link back to the original ProMED-mail report. The map can be zoomed and panned, and specific diseases and date ranges selected. In some countries, reports are mapped to the state or province level (with increased global geographic resolution in progress). The map currently incorporates English-language ProMED-mail reports as well as ProMED-ESP and can be viewed in English or Spanish.
This mapping system is part of an ongoing collaboration between ProMED-mail and HealthMap, which is based at Children's Hospital Boston, Harvard Medical School and the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology. A link to other HealthMap data sources is provided under "Feeds."
- PubMed, a service of the National Library of Medicine, includes over 15 million citations for biomedical articles back to the 1950's.
