VP 516/CHLH 516   Infectious Disease Epidemiology

Exercise on surveillance/control

For the class discussion next week, you will each summarize surveillance/ control measures
Select one of the following, and make use of both lecture notes and information in the readings
(this will provide you with opportunity to visit the background readings listed for these topics):

1) Human disease and health in the developing world

2) Animal disease and health in the developing world

3) Human disease and health in the developed world

4) Animal disease and health in the developed world

Each group will give a 10 minute presentation, followed by 5 min. discussion on Tuesday, Feb. 21.
Please adhere to the time limit. Use overheads and diagrams (or Powerpoint) as much as possible

For control topics use a specific disease as an example:

DO NOT SPEND TIME ON DETAILS ABOUT DISEASE AGENT, INIDVIDUAL HOST-PARASITE INTERACTIONS, IMMUNE RESPONSE, ETC.
Once you pick a disease, provide the other students to with background information about it (or direct them to it).

1) Description of potential control measures for given the transmission route(s) of a specific disease.
Consider critical links based on the whole transmission system.

2) Evaluation of these measures for the specific disease of your choice. Why is each likely/unlikely to work?
(consider key transmission mechanisms, redundancy and overlap, effect modifiers).

3) Integration of appropriate measures into a control strategy. Plan an integrated disease management program.
Consider issues such as choice of measures, timing of applications, simultaneous vs. successive applications,
relative importance of different measures under varying scenarios.

4) Evaluation of control programs. How would you evaluate the success of your proposed control program?
