Professional Interests:  Virulence mechanisms of pathogens, host immune defense mechanisms and diagnostic assays for infectious agents.

Respiratory disease is a major health problem in swine production and bacteria are a component of many of the respiratory diseases. Scientific understanding of the pathogenesis-virulence factors of the bacteria and defense mechanisms of the pig for these bacteria is incomplete. One approach to investigate how bacteria establish an infection and cause disease is to study which bacterial genes are activated during infection and then determine the function of the gene products. Preliminary studies are underway to pursue in vivo expression technology for toxigenic Pasteurella multocida , an essential etiologic agent in atrophic rhinitis. We are investigating polymerase chain reaction (PCR) based diagnostic assays for P. multocida, Bordetella bronchiseptica, Haemophilus parasuis and Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae.
