Environmental toxicologists study the mechanisms by which environmental chemicals damage living tissues, the health risks posed by exposure to environmental chemicals, and the ways in which plants and animals protect themselves from these chemicals. Environmental toxicologists study the adverse effects of chemicals on all aspects of the ecosystem: microbes, plants, animals and humans. They also develop ways to prevent or counter the potential adverse effects of chemicals that can be beneficial when used and disposed of appropriately. A broad and intensive program of study is required of students to succeed in this demanding profession.
