Annual Midwestern
Conference of Parasitologists
The 2008 Annual Midwestern Conference of Parasitologists is co-sponsored by Dr. Norman D. Levine and Dr. Jorge and Mary Anne Guerrero lecture series in veterinary parasitology.
Dr. Norman D. Levine was professor of parasitology at the University of Illinois from 1946 -1983. He was a key figure in parasitology research, and in 1986 he was named Distinguished Veterinary Parasitologist by the American Association of Veterinary Parasitologists.
Although a broadly trained and versatile parasitologist, Dr. Levine was perhaps best known for his contributions to the field of protozoal classification, with particular influence in describing the phylum Apicomplexa; he was co-author of “A revised classification of the phylum protozoa,” published in 1964, and he was lead author of “A newly revised classification of the protozoa,” published in 1980. In all, he had over 500 publications, including more than a dozen books. Dr. Levine died in 1999.
The University of Illinois’ College of Veterinary Medicine has memorialized his career with a placard by the entrance of the Basic Sciences Building. Every two years, a distinguished veterinary parasitology lecture is held in honor of Dr. Levine, established by Dr. Jorge and Mary Anne Guerrero.
Dr. Jorge Guerrero and his wife Mary Anne chose to honor his mentor, Dr. Norman D. Levine, by establishing a lecture series in his honor.
Dr. Guerrero himself was named Distinguished Veterinary Parasitologist by the American Association of Veterinary Parasitologists in 2005.
