Laminitis is a common, painful disease that affects the feet of horses. It is caused by the disruption of blood flow to the “laminae” within the foot, the part that links the coffin bone to the hoof wall. Severe laminitis destroys the laminae. Without the laminae, the coffin bone detaches from the hoof wall and sinks down. The change in the position of the coffin bone can be seen on radiographs.
