To strengthen the current understanding of the complex mechanisms underlying alphaherpesviral neurotropism, we developed a natural host model system for the swine alphaherpesvirus Aujeszky’s disease virus (ADV). In the process of developing this novel model system, we established and phenotypically characterized the first swine neuronal cell line. Utilizing Affymetrix porcine genome arrays, we are currently investigating gene expression profiles during ADV infection of these immortalized neuronal cells to identify neuron-specific viral-cell interactions.
