Division of Physiology

Faculty in the Division of Physiology teach general organ system physiology in the professional veterinary curriculum and some specialized organ system graduate level courses. The emphasis in all these offerings is on the mechanisms of normal function as related to integrative physiology in vertebrates. Research by faculty in the Division is supported by extramural funding from NIH, USDA, C-FAR, DOD, AHA, and a variety of local and private sources. Projects include studies designed to characterize the effects of estrogen on male reproductive function and on myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury. Equine exercise physiology, with particular emphasis on the effects of exercise on both the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, is a significant effort, along with central nervous system control of both male and female reproductive activity. There are also active funded projects in host/biomaterials interactions, and basic mechanisms of bile acid metabolism, as related to atherosclerosis.
