Online Alumni Directory
The first phase of a new, searchable online alumni directory, accessible to Alumni Association members only, was launched in September. Contact information about fellow UI alumni is now available on a per-name basis. To access the online directory, visit https://www.uiaadirectory.org.

Dues increase
The alumni volunteers on the Alumni Association's Board of Directors voted to increase the cost of an annual single membership to $45 and the cost of a life membership to $750, effective Oct. 1, 2001. In the five years since the last dues increase, the programs and services of the Alumni Association have expanded significantly in the areas of alumni records management, career services, constituent association relations, and Internet services.

Class of '52 Reunion
The first class to graduate from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine held its 49th reunion at the Pere Marquette Lodge in Grafton, Ill., in June. Attending were Mrs. Carol Baker, Mrs. Myrie Butzow, Mrs. Marlow Campbell, Mrs. Barbara Fehrenbacher, Mrs. Yvonne Fink, Mrs. Nancy Hendren, Dr. and Mrs. William Huber, Dr. and Mrs. Bob Latham, Dr. and Mrs. Charlie Lindley, Dr. and Mrs. Earl Lutz, Dr. and Mrs. Edward Murphy, Mrs. Mildred Patterson, Dr. and Mrs. Bill Specht, Dr. and Mrs. Smokey Stowe, and Dr. and Mrs. Robert Whalen.


Dr. Bradford Shive ('81) has taken a newly created position with Merial, Ltd., as the professional account manager for swine products in Illinois, Indiana, and some surrounding areas. Merial is the largest animal health company in the world, with sales exceeding $U.S. 1.6 billion. Dr. Shive and his wife, Leslie ('81), and their four children will continue to live in DeKalb, Ill.


Dr. Becky Armstrong ('83) has recently been promoted to a newly created position of assistant vice president for research compliance in the Office of the Vice President for Research at Purdue University. She will oversee the institution's compliance with human subjects and animal research, recombinant DNA and all research integrity issues.

She says she's come "a long way from my early days as an equine ambulatory practitioner, which just goes to prove that scientific training as a veterinarian can open many different kinds of doors."

Dr. Armstrong in 1998 completed a PhD in Adult Education, with emphasis on continuing professional education, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. "The combination [of degrees] has certainly contributed to my career success!" she says.


Dr. Frank Galey (CO '83, PhD IL '88) recently became dean of the University of Wyoming College of Agriculture. A Wyoming native, he has been at UW since 1999 as director of the Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory and head of that universityÕs Department of Veterinary Sciences.

From 1988 to 1999, Dr. Galey was at the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of California, Davis, leaving as associate professor of clinical diagnostic veterinary toxicology and head of the toxicology section.

Dr. Val Beasley, who was Dr. Galey's PhD advisor at Illinois in veterinary biosciences, notes, "Dr. Galey has served as president of the American Board of Veterinary Toxicology and the American Academy of Veterinary and Comparative Toxicology. He was among the hardest working, most astute and creative students I've had."


Dr. Rick J. Probst ('90), chief of the Department of Animal Resources at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Silver Spring, Md., has been certified as a diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM). After earning his DVM degree, he completed postdoctoral training in laboratory animal medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Bethesda, Md.


Dr. Mary (McCauley) Kraeszig ('93) was recently married in Lahaina, Maui, Hi., to Jay Kraeszig of Indianapolis. The couple reside with Dr. Kraeszig's daughter, Katie Safa, in Zionsville, Ind. Dr. Kraeszig is a small animal relief veterinarian and treasurer of the Society for Veterinary Medical Ethics.


Dr. Angela R. Kirkwood Houtz ('94) and her husband, Wesley, of Gurnee, Ill., have announced the October 2000 birth of their son, Brandon Raymond. Dr. Houtz works at Grayslake Animal Hospital.


Dr. Lisa Halliday ('96) received the Henry and Lois Foster Award from the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine for receiving the highest score on the written portion of the 2000 certifying examination given by the college. Dr. Halliday is a clinical veterinarian in the Biologic Resources Laboratory at the University of Illinois at Chicago.


Dr. Karen Lawrence-Blakeley ('97) graduated in May 2001 at the top of her class in the master's of public health degree program at the University of Illinois at Springfield. She recently accepted a position at All Pets Veterinary Clinic in Macomb, Ill.


Dr. Doug Carithers (Iowa '84, Small Animal EVP '00) was recently promoted to the position of senior director of CAGE North America Veterinary Professional Services. Dr. Carithers had been responsible for Veterinary Professional Services in the upper Midwest since 1997, during which time he completed the Small Animal Executive Veterinary Program certificate in Small Animal Health Management from the University of Illinois. Prior to joining Merial, Dr. Carithers was employed by Merck AgVet as a technical services veterinarian. He practiced in Iowa for 10 years, including more than 6 years as a practice owner, before joining industry.


Dr. A. Mark Green (TN '82, SA EVP '00) received the Martin Litwack Award from the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine for outstanding contributions to the college and profession. He owns Mallard Creek Animal Hospital in Charlotte, N.C.
