ALUMNI LISTINGS
Dr.
Erwin Small (57), associate dean of alumni and public affairs
at the College, received the 2001 ISVMA Presidents Award on February
17, 2002. The award seeks to honor an individual that has demonstrated
sustained dedication to the advancement of veterinary medicine.
President Rosemary J. LoGiudice, says I wanted to present it to
someone in Illinois who has demonstrated 'sustained dedication to the
advancement of veterinary medicine in Illinois. In her speech,
Dr. LoGiudice described Dr. Small as someone who not only bleeds
orange and blue, but lives, breathes, and bleeds veterinary medicine.
Dr. Ken Altera
(60) has been the director of pathology at Deltagen Corporation,
based in Redwood City, Calif., for the past 2 years. Deltagen uses proprietary
technologies to generate in vivo information on mammalian genes, with
emphasis on targets of interest to pharmaceutical development.
Dr. Donald Knowles
(82) has been named Distinguished Senior Research Scientist
of the Year by the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) for scientific
leadership in developing methods to diagnose costly animal diseases.
ARS is the U.S. Department of Agricultures chief scientific research
agency. Dr. Knowles currently heads the ARS Animal Disease Research
Unit in Pullman, Wash.
Dr. Yvonne Ambrogio-Nadler
(85) and her husband, Dr. Jay Nadler (82), took over
the ownership and management of Peotone (Ill.) Animal Hospital after
Jays father, Dr. James Nadler (54), retired in 1994.
Dr. Judy Karnia
(94), veterinarian at the Anti-Cruelty Society in Chicago, Ill.,
was featured in the Chicago Tribunes On the Job section
on December 5, 2001.
Dr. Karen Wruk
(97) and Rob Twying were married in February. Dr. Wruk is currently
employed at Burlington Longview Animal Hospital in Burlington, Wis.
Dr. Mary Hasty
(00) recently joined the Sandwich (Ill.) Veterinary Hospital.
She enjoys not only the dog and cat patients but also large animal practice.
Dr. Hasty spent last year in Shelbyville, Ill., doing 50 percent small
animal/50 percent large animal work. She is very happy to be returning
to her hometown of Serena.
Dr. Daniel Watson
(00) and Dr. Tracy Winterowd (00) were married in
May. Both are currently employed at the River Heights Clinic in Oswego,
Ill. The couple resides in North Aurora, Ill.

MEMORIAM
Dr. Max Hughes
(60) died on February 3, 2001. He attended the University of Illinois
for 6 years and graduated with a doctorate in veterinary medicine. He
owned and operated the Riverview Animal Hospital in Rome, Ill., until
1984.
