Design Criteria for Proposal
Goal:
Select an appropriate space within the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Illinois
and design a facility for the display of historic veterinary artifacts and literature.
Design Concept:
Accomplish the goal by using the following strategy:
- Locate the display in a highly used and visible area of the College.
- Design a space that encourages interaction among students, faculty and visitors.
- Design a flexible viewing system for a wide variety of historic materials.
- Provide as much secure display cabinetry and storage as possible.
- Provide an aesthetically pleasing environment.
- Provide a study area with computer stations and wireless internet access.
Design Solution:
Course of action proposed:
- The designated area is centrally located just a few steps off a busy corridor on the second floor in the Veterinary Medicine Basic Sciences Building (VMBSB).
- The proposed location is near the Academic and Student Affairs Office, which serves veterinary students, prospective students and visitors to the College.
- The display cabinets will be located in a popular study space adjacent to both the office of the Illinois Student Chapter of the AVMA and the emeritus faculty offices.
- Wood cabinets with glass shelves and storage space have been designed to properly display the historic veterinary artifacts and literature.
- Durable furniture has been selected for the Information Commons, which will provide a comfortable reading/study area and a place to use.
- The design for the millwork, architectural remodeling and interior decoration will be provided by The Design Group at the College of Veterinary Medicine.
