Design Criteria for Proposal

Goal:

Select an appropriate space within the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Illinois
and design a facility for the display of historic veterinary artifacts and literature.

Design Concept:

Accomplish the goal by using the following strategy:

  1. Locate the display in a highly used and visible area of the College.
  2. Design a space that encourages interaction among students, faculty and visitors.
  3. Design a flexible viewing system for a wide variety of historic materials.
  4. Provide as much secure display cabinetry and storage as possible.
  5. Provide an aesthetically pleasing environment.
  6. Provide a study area with computer stations and wireless internet access.

Design Solution:

Course of action proposed:

  1. The designated area is centrally located just a few steps off a busy corridor on the second floor in the Veterinary Medicine Basic Sciences Building (VMBSB).
  2. The proposed location is near the Academic and Student Affairs Office, which serves veterinary students, prospective students and visitors to the College.
  3. The display cabinets will be located in a popular study space adjacent to both the office of the Illinois Student Chapter of the AVMA and the emeritus faculty offices.
  4. Wood cabinets with glass shelves and storage space have been designed to properly display the historic veterinary artifacts and literature.
  5. Durable furniture has been selected for the Information Commons, which will provide a comfortable reading/study area and a place to use.
  6. The design for the millwork, architectural remodeling and interior decoration will be provided by The Design Group at the College of Veterinary Medicine.
