The University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine Zoo Club works to provide students with opportunities to learn about zoological medicine, wildlife medicine, and exotics. We bring in speakers from zoos and exotic practices to discuss cases, behavior, and other related topics. We tour the veterinary clinics of a variety of area zoos including Lincoln Park Zoo, Brookfield Zoo, Indianapolis Zoo, and St. Louis Zoo. We visit local zoos, such as Scovill Zoo in Decatur, and assist with minor procedures ranging from clipping toe nails, relocating tortoises, vaccinating for West Nile. We have even been privileged enough to pet the cheetahs. Students provide lectures about summer opportunities and 4th year externships related to zoological medicine, wildlife medicine, research, and overseas experiences. We also work closely with the Brookfield Zoo to give students a chance to practice their darting skills, which is necessary for both wildlife and zoological medicine.
